Dr. Megan Schmitz is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist who received her Bachelor’s Degrees in Psychology and in Sociology from Northern Illinois University and her Master’s and Doctoral Degrees from the American School of Professional Psychology. Dr. Schmitz has gained experience in the mental health field for over 15 years in a variety of settings, including a psychiatric hospital, private practice and in-home intensive treatment. She has worked primarily with adolescents and young adults and their families with a variety of presenting problems including, but not limited to Anxiety Disorders, Mood Disorders, ADHD and Disruptive Behavior Disorders. She has provided training and supervision to Doctorate Level Students as well as consultation and supervision to Licensed Clinicians, related to case conceptualization, psychological assessment and implementation of therapeutic interventions. Dr. Schmitz has been giving professional presentations for over 10 years to practitioners, school districts and the community.
Dr. Schmitz is a Contextual-Behavioral Psychologist, who specializes in treating Anxiety Disorders. She co-developed and programmed the Adolescent Anxiety Partial Hospitalization and Intensive Outpatient Program at Linden Oaks Hospital, which is the only anxiety program in the nation to have received disease-specific certification from the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO). JCAHO particularly appreciated the paradigm shift from Second-Wave Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to Third-Wave Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT). Upon transferring to the private practice sector, Dr. Schmitz created The Intensive Anxiety Clinic meant to bridge the gap between individual therapy and hospital-based programming. This intermediate level of care is intended to be a more proactive source of support for those just starting to show sign of serious impairment, with the goal of preventing the need for hospital-based care, as well as a more sustained, higher level of support for those stepping down from a hospital program or residential facility.
In addition to DBT and ACT, Dr. Schmitz integrates Exposure Therapy and Behavior Activation in her work. Her goals are to provide clients with concrete skills to manage distress, to help them to move towards acceptance of their internal experience, and to increase personal accountability for their choices while exerting more purposeful control over their behavior in order to improve both their daily functioning and contact with a full, meaningful life.
